Every Everlasting Dog Gobbler is cut from Double Jacket fire hose. It is the toughest hose we work with, and it is the only hose we use. Each toy is handmade in the USA, finished with stitched leather end caps, and built for dogs who put their toys to work.

Here is what "double jacket" means, what the pressure rating tells you, and how that hose becomes a toy.

What a "jacket" is

Fire hose is built in layers. On the inside is a liner, usually rubber or a synthetic material, that keeps water in. Around that liner is the jacket: a tightly woven textile layer, commonly polyester or nylon, that gives the hose its strength and protects it from abrasion.

The jacket is the part that takes the beating. When hose is dragged across pavement or pulled around corners, it is the woven jacket that keeps it intact.

Two woven walls

Double jacket hose has two woven walls, one inside the other, wrapped around the liner. That second layer is what gives it its strength. New double jacket fire hose is typically rated to around 1,200 PSI burst.

In toy form, double jacket hose is firm and sturdy. It has real structure and real heft, and when your dog clamps down and gets to work, there is plenty of material to work through.

What the PSI number tells you

Burst ratings measure how much internal water pressure a new hose is built to hold. They tell you the class of material you are dealing with. This is engineered, working-grade hose made to stand up to serious stress, and that is exactly what we want in a dog toy.

How the toys are made

Retired hose comes onto our bench, gets cleaned, and is cut by hand to size. Each piece is finished with stitched brown leather end caps. Because the hose is reclaimed, every toy carries its own colors, markings and character. No two are alike.

We make every size in small, limited batches. When a batch is gone, it is gone until the next one.
